Bathroom Safety Tips for People With Limited Mobility

The bathroom is where you can relax and forget your worries for a while. But because it’s often wet, the risk of slip and fall accidents is always there. This risk is especially high among older adults and physically challenged individuals.

To make your bathroom a safer and more accessible space to people with limited mobility, take note of these tips.

Dry Floors

Wet floors are a major cause of slip and fall accidents in bathrooms. If you’re the one who previously used the bathroom, mop it right after to help the floor dry quickly. You can also open the bathroom windows to let the breeze dehumidify the room and dry the floor.

Slip-Resistant Mats

Slip-resistant mats with rubber backing can reduce accidents in the bathroom. The elderly and physically challenged usually have joint pains and muscle weakness. They can lose their balance and suffer injuries if they slip. This risk is minimized if you use non-slip mats in the bathroom. You can also ask your contractor to find bathroom tiles that have a non-slip and mold-resistant coating.

Grab Bars

Grab bars have proven time and again that they can save lives. Individuals with limited mobility can use grab bars to keep themselves stable while turning on the shower or getting in and out of the bath, shower and toilet.

Good Lighting

Adults usually develop poor eyesight as they age. So, your older family members will need better lighting to navigate the bathroom safely. Install large windows that introduce plenty of sunlight during the daytime, and make sure there is enough artificial lighting to illuminate the space at night.

Are you living with older or physically challenged loved ones? A shower or tub replacement can help improve their experience in the bathroom. At The Bathroom Store, we’re ready to assist you with your bathroom remodel. Call us at (701) 223-1008, or fill out this contact form for a free consultation.
