A Quick Guide to Standard Bathtub Types and Sizes

In a bathroom, one element that normally takes up the most space is the bathtub or bathtub/shower combination. When planning the location for your bathtub, keep in mind that the free space in front of the unit should be long and wide enough to allow users to safely enter and exit the tub. In this post, a premier sink installation company shares a brief guide to different bathtub types and sizes.

  • Alcove Bathtubs. Bounded by three walls, an alcove is often the most practical way to position the tub within the bathroom. It generally works well in a smaller-sized room—around 6 x 6 or 7 x 7. Alcove bathtubs range in size from 4 ½ to 6 feet long and 30 to 36 inches wide.
  • Drop-In Bathtubs. A drop-in bathtub is designed to fit into a deck or frame with the top and exposed sides finished off with tile or another material. The structure must be at least a foot longer and wider than the tub, making it best suited for larger spaces. According to tub replacement experts, the standard length of a drop-in tub is 45 to 72 inches while the standard width ranges from 30 to 32 inches.
  • Freestanding Bathtubs. From simulations of the old-style claw-foot tubs to ultramodern pedestal tubs, freestanding tubs are a popular choice for medium- to large-sized bathrooms. 55 to 72 inches long and 27 to 32 inches wide are the standard dimensions of freestanding tubs.
  • Whirlpool Bathtubs. These tubs typically come in alcove-ready sizes since many modern, standard-sized tubs are being equipped with whirlpool functions. 60 inches long and 32 to 36 inches wide are the common dimensions of whirlpool tubs, which makes them a viable option in medium- to large-sized bathrooms.
